Upcoming Event: Thursday, January 22 @ Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

I love rollercoasters. I even did a paper on rollercoasters in college comparing the relationship between the need for speed in our recreational lifestyles to that of our everyday life pace getting faster. It was fascinating research and actually a fun paper to write. Lucky for me and other speed freaks, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is once again bringing the fun of science (with the bonus of rollercoasters) to adults that cannot shake that kid feeling.

On Thursday, January 22, 6–9pm prepare yourself for rollercoaster physics fun at the second installment of Science on the Rocks.

This event will focus on California Thrills with a special screening of ADVENTURES IN WILD CALIFORNIA on their brand new IMAX Dome screen. Also, back by popular demand is the Tinkering Studio where you will be able to create the hills, ramps, loops and tunnels of a miniature roller coaster. This is where Roger and I spent the majority of the time at the last event. Also try a surf simulator, sponsored by Hawaii Surf Simulators of Carlsbad. Since this is 21+ only, you can enjoy the museum without feeling like you are bumping some kid out of the way as you construct your coaster.

$20 admission includes full gallery access, an IMAX film, hands-on activities, light hors d’oeuvres and 2 drink tickets.

Think You Know Everything… Think Again.

I am a big fan of creative events, hence the style of my baby shower and wedding. Anyone who can take an event to another level by involving it’s participants in more than just drinking, straight up staring at a performance, I am all for. Perhaps that is why I love trivia nights and scavenger hunts. Anyhow, here is a list of events in San Diego that challenge your mind and sometimes your body:

Trivia Nights
Kipper’s Pop Culture Trivia @ The Whistle Stop in South Park
Every 1st and 3rd (and sometimes 5th) Monday of every month ($5)
Starts at 10pm-ish (more like 10:30pm)

Adam Gimbel’s Music Trivia Night @ The Whistle Stop in South Park
Every last Thursday of every month ($5)

Quiz Night @ Shakespeare’s Pub & Grille in Little Italy/Golden Hills
Every last Sunday of every month
Starts at 7:00pm

Think & Drink Trivia @ Winston’s in Ocean Beach
Every Tuesday night of every month ($1)
Starts at 6:00pm

Taco Tuesdays & Trivia Night @ Big Bertha’s Fish Joint in Pacific Beach
Every Tuesday night of every month
Starts at 7:00pm

Tuesday Night Trivia @ The Bitter End in the Gaslamp
Every Tuesday night of every month
Starts at 7:00pm
I can’t tell if trivia still happens here since the yelper’s are not even commenting on it.

Shower of all showers… You wish you were there.

Rock n’ roll baby. Yes, you wouldn’t really expect anything else from Roger and I. So to celebrate the little one in style, this past weekend we threw a karaoke shower at the Ruby Room (formerly the San Diego Sports Club). Friends from as far away as LA drove down to get their rock on – baby style.

Just like our wedding, we couldn’t do this traditional celebration the same old boring, awkward way. Guys and girls were there to partake, no traditional lame party games and no painstaking photo moments of opening each gift. Karaoke with a baby theme was all there was supplemented by munchies, cake and alcohol.

Each song sung (for the most part) contained words associated with baby, children, parents, etc. This left room for improvisation on many levels. Simple choices for baby songs would include “Baby Love” by the Supremes or “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. Those that sang chose more obscure songs including “Mother, Mother” by Tracy Bonham and “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mix-A-Lot, and even “Its So Hard To Be A Baby” (“Dur Dur d’etre un Bebe”) by Jordy (the youngest kid ever to record a #1 single).

One of the most memorable moments was both of my sisters singing “Push It” by Salt n’ Pepa with the video in the background showing Sesame Street with the letter “P” as the topic. Perfect timing. Also, Adam Gimbel sang something about a baby extractor machine. I still can’t figure out where the hell that came from.

My sweet husband got up and sang “Having My Baby” by Paul Anka… gotta love him. I did manage to get on stage and squeak out “Black Balloon” by the Goo Goo Dolls. Karaoke or getting on stage for that matter, is still not really my thing. But I really enjoy watching others singing and making fools of themselves.

I want to thank the Ruby Room, Marie Haddad, Tricia Olsen, Adam Gimbel, and Pants for helping put on the most awesome shower ever. Sorry you missed it… stoked if you were there.
