Upcoming Event: Saturday, January 24 – Charitable Scavenger Hunt

Somehow I missed this one. This scavenger hunt was created as a fundraiser for the Junior League of San Diego (who happen to do great work with the Girl Scouts). Have a blast while doing good. This is my kind of event.

Operation City Hunt @ Embarcadero Maria North Park
Saturday, Jan 24
10am-3pm ($50 plus raise an additional $50)
Adult only event

“This fun filled day begins with a scavenger hunt race throughout downtown San Diego. On the day of the event, teams will have to solve clues to find local San Diego businesses and places of interest. Once each location is discovered participants will be asked to perform a fun activity, often supporting the business which has partnered with the Junior League of San Diego.”

There is a post race party at The Minus One Lounge at The Keating Hotel. Race participants do get a “thank you for participating” drink at the party (no kidding, that is what they call it).

Upcoming Event: Thursday, January 22 @ Reuben H. Fleet Science Center

I love rollercoasters. I even did a paper on rollercoasters in college comparing the relationship between the need for speed in our recreational lifestyles to that of our everyday life pace getting faster. It was fascinating research and actually a fun paper to write. Lucky for me and other speed freaks, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center is once again bringing the fun of science (with the bonus of rollercoasters) to adults that cannot shake that kid feeling.

On Thursday, January 22, 6–9pm prepare yourself for rollercoaster physics fun at the second installment of Science on the Rocks.

This event will focus on California Thrills with a special screening of ADVENTURES IN WILD CALIFORNIA on their brand new IMAX Dome screen. Also, back by popular demand is the Tinkering Studio where you will be able to create the hills, ramps, loops and tunnels of a miniature roller coaster. This is where Roger and I spent the majority of the time at the last event. Also try a surf simulator, sponsored by Hawaii Surf Simulators of Carlsbad. Since this is 21+ only, you can enjoy the museum without feeling like you are bumping some kid out of the way as you construct your coaster.

$20 admission includes full gallery access, an IMAX film, hands-on activities, light hors d’oeuvres and 2 drink tickets.

Think You Know Everything… Think Again.

I am a big fan of creative events, hence the style of my baby shower and wedding. Anyone who can take an event to another level by involving it’s participants in more than just drinking, straight up staring at a performance, I am all for. Perhaps that is why I love trivia nights and scavenger hunts. Anyhow, here is a list of events in San Diego that challenge your mind and sometimes your body:

Every Tuesday night of every month

Tuesday Night Trivia @ The Bitter End in the Gaslamp

I can’t tell if trivia still happens here since the yelper’s are not even commenting on it.

Staring at the Sun: Volume 7

This week another volume of Staring at the Sun (San Diego Music Compilation) came out into the world produced by Bart Mendoza and Chuck Schiele at Blindspot Records. With it, three shows around town featuring various artists from for the CD. This past Sunday during The Local Pyle live broadcast at The Casbah, the first of the three shows resumed. The next two shows are scheduled for Saturday, January 3 at Lestat’s (9pm) and Saturday, January 11 at House of Blues (7pm).

Per usual, the CD and shows reach out into the depths of the San Diego music scene to feature potentially up-and-coming bands and artists. The genres are spread from blues to acoustic to rock to mod. The collection often brings to life artists that may have been hidden under the radar from listeners for years.

Volume 7’s songs and artists of note include The Modlins – For The Good of The Armor, Wendy Bailey – I Swear, I say and The Anna Troy Band – I Can’t Don’t Want To Faster, among 19 other local goodies.

Although there was a ten year break between Volumes 5 and 6, the next Staring at the Sun compilation (Volume 8) is scheduled to come out next year, including a DVD of local artist performances. Personally, I can’t wait!
