What I Learned Today… calendars

It doesn’t matter what kind of calendar I maintain, I will NEVER have my events straight.

I used to own a Palm Pilot. I was pretty good with it for a while because it was novel. But then I got a day job where we used Outlook all of the time. I still have that job, but realized after contemplating leaving that keeping my personal stuff on my work calendar (even if locked to private) wasn’t that great of an idea. Then I tried Google calendars but since I didn’t have a Blackberry or iPhone, I couldn’t update it on the go therefore it got neglected. So for a while I was without a calendar, relying on Roger and our refrigerator calendar to keep me up to speed… and that just drove me insane.

Currently, I use the old-fashioned $1 weekly planner that a pen or pencil is required. I use pencil cause a) I don’t trust people and b) I know shit changes.

Ideally, we check with each other on a weekly basis and check concert calendars on a monthly basis, depending on the venue. Roger’s planner is identical except the color of the cover making comparing calendars easier. But if it doesn’t get written down, I don’t remember it is happening and I feel bummed later, and then I write down the wrong date (all the freaking time)… Like today that I found I had written Fiesta del Sol down for next weekend. Um, that event has come and gone. Ridiculous.

I really want to go back to Google calendar and use my iTouch; I can at least use when there is wi-fi and make notes for upcoming events on the go kind of like i did with my Palm. But I know whatever form of calendaring I use, and even if I am good about writing things down in it, that it still won’t guarantee I will be at an event or show I really wanted to go to.

What I Learned Today… Bruxism

I have bruxism.

After some Twitter conversations about swimmers ear and TMJ (Temporomandibular joint disorder), I started looking at my own teeth jaw habits. For the last few years, I know that I have been grinding my teeth at night. Dentists over the years have gently reminded me that my teeth were looking worn and it was only after I started roller derby whan I went to the guys at Guard Ya Grill that any dentist recommended that I really should get a night guard since my molars were beginning to develop stress fractures. Night guard secured… who really wants broken teeth.

After my pregnancy, I had to get a crown for one of my molars that the fracture had gotten out of control. You know, because pregnancy ruins your teeth… lowers calcium levels and such. Damn kids.

It is only in the recent months that I have been seriously thinking about my oral habits… grinding or clenching my teeth at night (or while napping) and chewing on my fingers or gum. I really want to kick these habits. Know I at least have a name to go with the problem, bruxism. Not quite TMJ but definitely a symptom. I know that this could progress into TMJ, but my goal is to not let that happen. Lowering daytime stress levels, constant awareness of my chewing behaviors and continuous discussions with my dentist should help me head in the right direction.

Personal, I know… but the more you know.

Handlery Hotel pool parties are back!

I have been waiting on the official word that the Sunday pool parties at the Handlery Hotel in Mission Valley for about a month now. I finally found some confirmation from a post on SanDiego.com that this awesome summer tradition is back. I was a little worried that after the hotel went through a multi-million dollar renovation this winter they wouldn’t want to invite the public back to trash the newly resurfaced pool. I am so glad I was wrong.

Even though Lady Dottie and the Diamonds will not be returning to the scene, this is an awesome opportunity to bask in the sun with a drink, play in the pool with the kiddies, or hop in the hot tub all while listening to a live band. To my family, this IS our community pool.

The very first pool party of the summer will be Sunday, July 4th with a live performance by Mystique Element of Soul, a rhythm and blues cover band. I guess they were waiting for the June gloom to wear off to bring the party on. The music is from 2:00pm – 5:00pm but I recommend getting there early (around noon) if you want a lounge chair or a table by the pool. Perhaps the pre-planning won’t be necessary as the hipsters are likely to bypass this opportunity do to the band choice. Oh well, more room for us. The pool party will be every other Sunday running from July through the end of September. Make sure to get your parking validated at the bar.

In addition to Sunday afternoons, Wednesday nights from 5:00-8:30pm has become an acoustic music song swap hosted by Chris Dale. We had a chance to check it out a week ago with Robin Henkel and Jeff Berkley in the mix. A little mellower than the Sunday parties, but still an awesome chance to check out the hot tub and to see what the local acoustic music scene has to offer.

What I Learned Today… Emoticons

I still hate emoticons after learning the history and purpose of using them.

Thanks to Anne Trubek and her recent post for GOOD I now know that even though these silly faces help indicate tone and voice in an email or text, I still have an extreme dislike for them. Mostly the hate comes from the tackiness and sheer over-use of the little buggers.

My personal use of emoticons is limited the simple smiley face and the wink face but only in their raw forms… : ) and ; ). The colorful, animated versions often seen on poorly designed marketing websites,  you know… the ones that try too hard to show they know something about making a website, grate on my nerves in the same way the Twilight series does (yes, both the books and the movies). Think teenage hysteria or junky knickknacks. Pointless, ugly and annoying.

*****

Dear random people looking up emoticons… a big thank you for coming to my site. Please take a look around. You might like it.

What I Learned Today… a new mini-series

It’s not like I really needed to add any additional things-to-do in my life, but lately I have been watching my 17 month old pick up language and concepts at a rapid pace and begin to think about my own learning. I have always heard and known that we learn something new everyday. Articles, including this recent series by the New York Times, on learning processes only added to my desire to document my own everyday learnings.

So, after much thought, I will test this little self-reflection experiment in the public forum that is this blog. Since I really don’t want to start another blog, I thought I would tack it onto karmic life as a mini-series. “Mini” because I don’t want to over-commit myself. I plan to try this for a month and then see how it goes. Some entries will be longer than others depending on time and what I actually learned that day. Please comment on the blog, twitter or facebook to let me know what you think. Well, not like it really matters. I am doing this for me.

Here is the start: Day 1 of What I Learned Today…

The Polyphonic Spree created the soundtrack for the Independent film Thumbsucker. Originally Elliott Smith was supposed to develop the music for  the movie  but he passed away during its creation.

Thumbsucker resonated with both me and my husband as both of us used this method of consolement for many more years than the average individual. I managed to break the habit at nine years old with the aid of orthodontic tactics (placing prongs on the roof of my mouth), while Roger continue until he was fifteen. The habit not only had physical repercussions (years of braces and head-gear), but social repercussions which is the premise behind the movie.

We resigned ourselves to believing that our child was doomed to carry on this unfavorable behavior, but luckily for us (well, really for him) he never took to sucking his thumb, finding solace within.

After hearing one of The Polyphonic Spree songs from the soundtrack on Slacker and realizing that I hadn’t heard the song before, I instantly knew that I must make this album part of my collection. If I hadn’t made myself promise to go to yoga today, my lunch break would have been a trip to M-Theory to try to secure myself a copy of the Thumbsucker soundtrack.  In due time.
